Par l’appropriation d’images provenant des politiques et des archives de l’institution, Natalie Lafortune rend visible l’aspect politique de l’architecture de l’UQAM et l’utopie entourant le projet initial. D’une part, elle propose une réflexion sur l’écart qui existe entre l’intention et le résultat du projet architectural de l’université et, de l’autre, une réflexion sur l’incidence de la présence des pictogrammes de surveillance par caméra à l’intérieur des murs de l’école. Ses installations questionnent notre rapport à l’architecture, à l’espace et aux grands projets sociétaux.
Natalie Lafortune’s interest in the history and politics of UQAM’s specific architecture have lead her focus towards the Agora, one of the central spaces of the university. In her site-specific installations Lafortune unravels the politics of the academic sphere through the appropriation of the university’s visual politics. Her appropriation of these images offers viewers the opportunity to question their relation to their environment – particularly, to question its architectural and social aspects.
